Description:

The Wiggins type gasholder consists of a shell, piston and a seal. The seal consists of a complete cylinder of synthetic rubber coated fabric fastened to the shell at one end and to the moving piston to the other end. This seal and bolted connections to the shell and piston form a gas tight closure between the lower shell and moving piston. The pressure of the stored gas causes the seal to lay against the piston or shell surface and roll from one surface to the other to accommodate the movement of piston. There is no friction involved in the rolling action of seal.

Any condensate from the stored gas which forms on the seal, piston or shell will collect at the bottom of the tank where it can be drained away. The clearance between the shell and the moving piston gives a high factor of safety against binding. The piston is prevented from rotation or side movement by the action of the seal.
