Overall Responsibility

• Management of STAG and ongoing development of all aspects of the organisation.

Specific Responsibilities

Traveller participation
• Resourcing Traveller participation in all actions and structures and the cultivation and support of Traveller Leadership.

ACHIEVEMENTS:
I have achieved significant objectives by working in an empowering way with staff, board members, the target community and relevant stakeholders. The organisation grew in terms of staff numbers, funding, programmes and outputs. Some of the notable achievements include:
Promoting and protecting human rights:
Mainstreamed the human rights based approach in all programmes
Raised awareness and respect for human rights of travellers, particularly the right to housing
Facilitated legal remedies to human rights violations, 10 travellers won discrimination cases
Successful lobbying of councillors and members of parliament to promote and protect traveller human rights to housing
Successfully influenced the adoption of traveller accommodation policy that was responsive to traveller requirements and human rights
Raised awareness of Traveller human rights violations and managed to establish cross political party support for Travellers

Secured funding to:
Implement programmes to promote and protect Traveller human rights
Refurbish and extend resource centre creating office and training space,
Purchase of 15 seater minibus,
Train women in decision making, men’s training programme and to buy equipment such as power point projectors, 30 computers, 5 laptops etc

Organisational Development
Initiated and successfully completed computerised accounting system from basic manual accounts for the organisation
Established and put in place finance procedures and policies
Built corporate organisational profile and identity through adoption of logo, letter heads, annual reports and publications
Established staff terms and conditions handbook and put in place work procedures
Effectively represented the organisation at working level meetings including in meetings with government agencies, non-governmental organizations and the Travelling community
Provided guidance to staff
Used effective leadership and coaching skills to equip voiceless Travellers with the capacity to stand up on their own and claim respect and protection for their human rights

UNITED NATIONS MISSION IN LIBERIA (UNMIL)
Human Rights Officer, January –June 2008
Responsibilities
To monitor and report on the human rights situation, and organize trainings and sensitization campaigns on human rights for specific target groups, under the guidance of the Chief Human Rights Officer
Description of main responsibilities and duties:
• Monitoring and reporting: collect information pertaining to human rights, including relevant political and legal developments, from a variety of data sources; liaise with government, NGOs, civil society, UN Agencies and other partners to create baseline data on the human rights situation, with special attention to vulnerable groups and including gender-specific indicators; conduct substantive research and analysis of human rights issues/events and assess their impact on the human rights situation in one’s area of operations; draft a variety of reports and correspondence as appropriate
• Programming: assist in developing policy and operational approaches to mainstream human rights; ensure human rights issues, including gender aspects, are integrated into UNMIL’s field operations and into political, humanitarian and economic programmes in general; to this end, maintain close liaison with UNMIL’s Child Protection, Civil/Political Affairs, Gender and other relevant Sections
• Training: identify target groups in need of training in human rights, international humanitarian law and the rule of law, both within and outside UNMIL, including the national military, police, law enforcement officials, civil society, etc., to strengthen national capacity in the area of human rights; design induction courses and training programmes and develop training tools for these groups
• Other duties as required by the Human Rights Section, including a variety of administrative tasks




Achievements
I achieved the following outcomes from implementing my duties:
Monitoring and reporting:
I monitored courts, police stations, immigration, communities, schools and from NGOs and complied the following reports:Weekly reports, covering weekly activities, monthly report, covering monthly activities undertaken, County profile; providing information on the human rights situation in the County (first draft) and workshop reports
Training
•Facilitated a session on children’s Rights at a workshop organized by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission at Bopulu Central High School for 71 children
•Facilitated a session on Sexual and Gender based violence for 16 Peer educators at a workshop organized by an NGO Peace building Resource Centre
•Facilitated human rights awareness sessions for 14 teachers at Gbarma High School
•Facilitated human rights awareness sessions for 15 teachers and Amadu school
•Organized a workshop on human rights and harmful traditional practices (HTP) for Madina Community and facilitated a session on human rights and HTP. 40 participants attended
•Facilitated a workshop on human rights for the community human rights radio in Gbarma for 15 participants
Other Activities
•Organized and launched the human rights poster competition for schools and disseminated the posters in the County
•organized radio talk shows on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission with radio Bopulu
•Developed a schedule for human rights programmes with staff of community human rights radio
•Facilitated discussions with women's groups
•Assisted in running human rights clubs
•Developed close working relationships with NGOs particularly CCF and Peace building Resource Centre

Plan, coordinate and organize national and regional conferences, orientations and training programmes
Design, administer and produce programme narrative, financial and evaluation reports to fulfill funding partner obligations. (DANIDA, EU, SIDA, NORAD, DUTCH EMBASSY, CIDA, US EMBASSY)
Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports,
Brief and advise the Executive Director on related regional programme developments and programming with related partners,
Participate at national, regional and international workshops,
Network with stakeholders in human rights, democracy and good governance,
Prepare relevant materials for publication,
Conduct research in various human rights themes
Interview and recruit staff, interns and volunteers,
Provide leadership and supervision of staff, volunteers and programme participants,
Manage public relations of the organization.
Achievements
•Conceptualised, designed, implemented and managed strategic, national and regional human rights and governance programmes in the SADC region. The aim was to increase awareness, strengthen knowledge, and build the capacity of civil society, media and government agencies.
I successfully implemented the following programmes:
Incorporation of Human Rights and Gender in the Zimbabwe Republic Police 1998- 2001, human rights was introduced in the police curriculum
Incorporation of human rights in the Southern Africa Police Cooperation Organisation, SARPCCO (Interpol sub regional grouping)
Democracy Linkage with Zimbabwean Parliamentarians 1999 – 2001,
Incorporating human rights at the Faculty of Education and its associate Teacher Training Colleges, 1998,
State Party reporting for the Zimbabwe Inter - ministerial Committee 1999 – 2000
Human Rights and the Media, 1998 – 1999.
•Published resource books and training manuals on human rights and policing
•Developed and managed advocacy programmes aimed at raising awareness, increasing demand and utilization of human rights enforcement mechanisms in the SADC region;
•Mainstreamed human rights principles and approaches into crosscutting issues such as policing, gender equality, HIV/AIDS, education, health, poverty reduction, policy, etc.
•Managed strategic partnerships and networks with relevant partners to influence coherent policy formulation and practices at the national, regional and international level in relation to human rights;
•Trained and facilitated the production of state party reports by SADC states for submission to Treaty Bodies as well as assisted civil society to develop and submit shadow reports
•Provided human rights training courses in the following areas: civil and political rights, child rights, social, economic and cultural rights, shadow reporting, human rights for policing, state party reporting, international human rights enforcement mechanisms and good governance for civil society, media and governments;
•Immensely contributed to the organisational building of SAHRIT which is now a very successful International Human Rights NGO
