ACADEMIC PROJECTS

1. A detailed study on root alkaloids of three different cultivars of Catharanthus roseus.

Duration: 3 months

Techniques used: Chromatography (Paper, TLC, 2-D, Column), AGE, PAGE, Dialysis.

Description: Catharanthus roseus has more than 100 alkaloids of which Vinblastine and Vincristine are the two most important anticancerous alkaloids.

The work aimed at extraction, estimation, separation and study of the root alkaloids of three cultivars of the plant following Soxhlet extraction, Chromatographic techniques

( TLC, 2-D, Column) and Spectral recording using UV-Vis Spectrophotometre.

A comparative study of root alkaloids was done with other parts of the plant.

Antimicrobial activity of the root extract was compared with leaf extract.

Biochemical analysis including DNA estimation by AGE, protein by PAGE and peroxidase enzyme analysis of the three different cultivars of the plant was done.

2. Xenobiotics and their biodegradation (A theoretical study).

3. A project report on production and marketing of Bamboo chips.

A three day seminar cum workshop on Animal Cell Culture protocols sponsored by M.G. University and Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment at School of Medical Education, Kottayam.

A three day National seminar on Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at Mar Augusthinose College, Ramapuram.

A three day workshop cum seminar on Basic techniques in Applied Biology at St.Thomas College, Palai.

A one day seminar on Plant Biotechnological Approaches for Crop Improvement at Mar Athanasios College for Advanced studies, Thiruvalla.
