USDA Forest Service 5/2007 – 1/2008. Sierra National Forest, Bass Lake R.D., North Fork, CA. Archaeology Technician: Acted as a crew leader over one GS-05 archaeology technician. Duties consisted of researching the sites and geographic locales that would be impacted by planned timber management projects and then conducted the necessary archaeological pedestrian surveys, site visits, and site record updates. Prepared site reports, monitoring reports, isolate artifact, historic artifact, milling station, and railroad linear site forms, as well as site map, feature, and artifact sketches. Prepared final project summary report, which consisted of an analysis of all field work and included related spreadsheets and project maps. Organized collected data and prepared files for the site records. Routinely used photographic equipment to record site views, artifacts and features. Routinely used GPS equipment (Garmin Etrex Vista Cx, Garmin 76) to locate and identify geospacial positions and to collect geospatial data for download to pc. Used ArcCatalog (ESRI ArcGIS-9) to create GPS waypoint data tables, features and layers and ArcMap (ESRI ArcGIS-9) to develop project maps identifying point/linear/polygonal sites and feature locations and to create topographic location maps. Routinely use MS Word and Excel to prepare final reports and/or spreadsheets. Routinely use field equipment and navigation aids such as a compass, topographic maps, aerial photos, and two-way radios. USDA Forest Service 6/2005 - 10/2005, Crescent, OR US Archaeology Technician: Duties consisted of archaeological survey, site inventory and sub-surface test unit excavation of prehistoric and historic sites within Crescent Ranger District, Deschutes National Forest. Conducted site damage assessments and wrote damage assessment reports. Cataloged artifact collections. Prepared site reports, site maps and site, feature and artifact sketches, as well as other forms related to the recording of site information. Used photographic equipment to record site locations, excavated unit soil profiles, site features, and in situ artifacts. Acquired geospatial data with GPS equipment (Trimble and Garmin Etrex) and downloaded data to create maps for ArcView and ArcGIS9. Used UTM coordinates and GPS equipment to locate sites in addition to standard survey use of compass with topographic maps and aerial/satellite photos. In addition, in October 2005, I conducted site sub-surface testing and survey of three sites as a volunteer under a Special Use Permit. This was part of my thesis research on post-Mazama occupations of Davis Lake. Fifteen one by one meter test units were excavated and appropriate reports, maps and sketches were submitted to Crescent Ranger District. Other volunteer work included the cataloging of several other sites in the Davis Lake basin.
U.S.D.A. Forest Service, 6/ 2004 - 9/ 2004, Deschutes Nat’l Forest Crescent Archaeology Technician: As part of a four-person crew, performed archaeological pedestrian survey to identify new sites and existing site boundaries. Performed site sub-surface testing, i.e., shovel probe testing and one-by-one meter test unit excavation. Collection of diagnostic artifacts and completion of all pertinent forms, such as isolate, test unit excavation, shovel probe and site report forms. Routine duties included site location, orientation, and layout of test units and shovel probes, sketching artifacts and site and feature maps. Routinely used photographic equipment to record site location, unit soil profiles, site features and in situ artifacts. Collected GPS data for datum, site, feature, and artifact locations. I was responsible for the collection and completeness of paperwork pertaining to shovel probe and test unit excavations. Skills - compass navigation, topographic map and aerial photo reading, GPS data collection, interpretation of aerial photos for site location, GIS map production (ArcMap, ArcView, ArcGIS-8).
