Key Responsibilities

Establishment of primary cultures from water snakes and maintenance of the same. Immunostaining to check types of cells present in the culture and, limiting dilution to get specific cell type cell lines. Chromosome preparation from these cells lines and subsequently using FACS to sort these chromosomes for snake specific painting probes.

Dec 2006 to May 2007 as “Intern” (MSc, Dissertation), with Mrs. Lakshmi Rao (Dr. Lalji singh’s group), CCMB, Hyderabad, India.

Project

1. Chromosome Abnormalities: Genetic Images of Life
Work Summary: Chromosomal rearrangements are associated with infertility and mental retardation. Our study is dealing with different infertility and mental retardation cases. Each case is showed an interesting association with a particular phenotype. Chromosomal rearrangements are identified by the conventional banding technique GTG banding and for confirmation we used fluorescent insitu hybridization, NOR staining, Acro p arm staining.

2. Role of Leptin in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Work Summary: Leptin having an imporatnt role in the regulation of body fat and food intake which is associated with obesity. PCOS is associated with increased androgen, insulin level and infertility. Some PCOS patients are showing increased level of leptin and obesity. The present study was aimed at investigating the genetic relation between the leptin receptor gene (LEPR) and PCOS using polymerase chain reaction followed by sequencing. A case-control-based study approach was used, which included 102 controls, 50 lean PCOS and 60 obese PCOS from the Indian women population

Summer trainings
Insilco drug designing using QSAR with Indian institute of chemical biology (IICB) Kolkata, under the guidance of Dr. Nanda Ghoshal.

Summary of the work: Designing of small molecules on the Hyper-chem software and ACD chemskech (PC based software) and Cerius2 module (SGI machine, IRIX based software) this included modeling and energy minimization to obtain the least energy conformation. Also included modeling of few compounds for carrying out QSAR studies of some anti-convulsant compounds (some part of the work being carried out in the lab) using QSAR related modules of Cerius2 software and minimization the same using Smart Minimization option.
