“GENETIC POLYMORPHISM OF GSTM1, GSTT1 AND GSTP1 GENE IN MAHARASTRIAN ORAL CANCER POPULATION”

Oral cancer is a major public health problem in South-Central Asia home to one fifth of the world’s population. In most regions of India, it is the most common cancer in men and the third most common cancer in women. Mass use of tobacco product has resulted in the country recording the hishest number of oral cancer cases in the world. The present study investigates the genetic polymorphism in GSTM1, GSTP1 genes in oral cancer population and compare with healthy control population of same etnic origin. The frequency of GSTM1 genotype detected in control population was 86% and the GSTM1 null was 14% whereas the exposed population showdd 70 % and 29 % respectively. The association between cases and control were assessed by Odd ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). The odd ratio for GSTM1 genotype was found to be 205; 95% confidence interval 0.885-7.382 (P value 0.084). The result shows that GSTM1 null may be susceptible factor for oral cancer in Maharastrian population. The frequency of GSTMT1 genotype detected in control population was 94% and the GSTT1 null was 6%. In exposed population it was found to be 91% and 9% respectively. The GSTT1 genotype doesn’t show any statistically significant difference. The frequencies of GSTP1 genotype detected in control population were ile/ile 55% , ile/Val 36% and Val / Val 8 % and in exposes population it was found to be 51 % , 48 % and 0% respectively. The GSTP1 genotype does not show statistically significant difference betweeen control and exposed population (OR = 0.775 ; 95% CI 0.357-1.680; P value 0.522). In conclusion our study suggests that GSTM1 null genotype may be a predisposing factor for oral cancer in Maharastrian population. However, our results have to be validated with higher number of samples.
