M.Sc. THESIS

• Title: “Development of an advance anaerobic method for food industry effluent treatment”.

Thesis Abstract:

Water is a basic renewal natural resources upon which the survival and well being of living organisms depends. Problem of water pollution as a result of rapid industrialization in now a well know phenomenon. Large amount of water is use in industries for various purposes and most of industries discharge large amount of effluent which ultimately pollute the surrounding. In present study Britannia Food Industry, SIDCUL, Pantnagar has been selected for waste water pollutant load study and its mitigation by development of a suitable low cost appropriate technology for its treatments.
An Up flow anaerobic sludge filter reactor designed and various experiments have been performed for evaluation of reactor efficiency. A 20 liter reactor has been taken to conduct the experiment which was filled with different types of packing materials. 30% inoculum concentration has been taken as seeding material as it was optimized in comparison to 10%, 20% and 40%.
It was found that at 12 hrs HRT A-type of reactor (stone packing) give better COD, BOD, TDS & Oil and Grease removal efficiency and produce methane gas as byproductin in comparison to B-type (small caps of glass cold drink bottles) and control reactor.
Thus, in present study it was observed that developed reactor reduces the pollutants concentration more as compared to conventional anaerobic treatment and gives energy rich biogas (methane) as byproduct and it can be serve as a useful fuel to help offset a growing demand for energy.
