Title: A reclassification of the agroecological regions of Zimbabwe
Abstract
Agroecological zones or Natural Regions are land areas that are characterized by similar climate, agricultural practices and ecology. Agroecological zoning enables agriculturalists to efficiently utilise the lands resources to produce enough food without compromising its capacity to do so in the future. The purpose of this research was to reclassify the Agroecological regions of Zimbabwe using the FAO Simple Limitation Approach. The parameters used in the reclassification process were rainfall, soil and length of growing season suitability. Rainfall data for selected stations covered the period 1972-1992. Data on soil were obtained from the soil map of Zimbabwe while the lengths of the growing season data for the selected stations were obtained from the New Local Climate database. The suitability classes for each parameter were done with reference to maize, the major staple crop for Zimbabwe. The least path algorithm was used to overlay the suitability zone maps of all the parameters, which were given the same weighting in the final analysis. The previous classification had five agroecological regions and this classification came up with the same number of regions, however the sizes of regions had changed. The size of Natural Regions 1, 4 and 5 had increased by 7415 km2 (106%), 8195 km2 (5.6 %) and 23415 km2 (22.5 %) respectively. Natural Regions 2 and 3 had decreased by 28878 km2 (49 %) and 10146m km2 (13.9 %) respectively. There is therefore need for reclassification but more stations need to be incorporated by making use of the New Local Climate database so as to improve on precision.
Keywords: agroecological zoning, simple limitation approach, soil, rainfall, length of growing season.
