EDUCATIONAL PROFILE

Ph. D.
Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture, Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India
Date of graduation: June 2001
OGPA: 8.96/10.0
Thesis Title
Genetic studies on development and evaluation of inter sub-specific (indica and tropical japonica) hybrids of rice (Oryza sativa L.)
Guides
i. Dr. T. Nageswara Rao, Professor & Head, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture, ANGRAU, Hyderabad
ii. Dr. B.C. Viraktamath, Head, Division of Crop Improvement, Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad
Brief Abstract
The study was carried out in three separate experiments during 1997-99 for studying the compatibility between different indica/japonica and indica/tropical japonica varieties, the heterotic performance of F1 hybrid combinations, F2 segregation analysis, genetics of wide compatibility trait along with morphological markers like apiculus pigmentation, and to assess the cooking quality characteristics of the inter sub-specific hybrids.
Based on the results of experiments it could be summarized as follows:
i. The level of heterosis observed in certain inter sub-specific hybrids is very high compared to parents and checks. Hence, it is possible to develop heterotic hybrid combinations through inter sub-specific hybridization. However, most of the hybrids studied, exhibited negative heterosis for yield and yield components. This may be due to the lack of high level of compatibility between the parents. This suggests the need to select the parents with broad spectrum compatibility is order to develop superior hybrid combinations.
ii. The segregation of spikelet fertility in F2 generation of five selected cross is not in agreement with 3: 1 ratio, indicating the complex nature of wide compatibility trait. The F2 plants segregated 3 violet: 1 colourless for apiculus colour, showing the monogenic inheritance.
iii. Better quality of the inter sub-specific hybrids was also observed with long slender grain type, intermediate amylose content and gelatinization temperature.
iv. Among the 28 hybrids studied, the hybrid IR-64446/IR-36 was found to be superior because of its better yield performance and grain quality.
v. These studies clearly indicated that there is wide scope to exploit the phenomenon of heterosis through inter sub-specific hybrids. This can be achieved either by three line or two line approach.
vi. The genetics of wide compatibility trait can be studied thoroughly by using biochemical and molecular techniques.
